Cosmographies

E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle
Formal reflections on the Divine Comedy.

From the cosmogonies of the first drawings in which the alphabet-sign is still visible, the artist arrives at the essence of his cosmogonic concept by reasoning on the double register of colour and word. Word often understood as the evocation of a writing of the soul, of an unconscious message, of an archaic calligraphy, traced in the dust of matter and deposited on canvas.
As in Shan Shui (traditional Chinese painting), the artist paints the invisible. The Chinese works remind us of the paths on the sacred Taoist mountains traced by the monks, they paint nature in a constant cross-reference between a philosophical and spiritual path and a geographical one, the clouds become the sea and the fog waves that allow the mountains to take flight. Thus JMB’s cosmographies reveal to us the inaccessible, landscapes of the soul characterised by a set of almost mystical rules concerning balance, composition and form.
