2000-2008
Formal reflections upon the text of San Juan de la Cruz.
The cycle La Noche Oscura, dedicated to the search for light that emerges like a glimmer from the darkness, marks a fundamental step in the artist’s pictorial research and the turning point from paper to canvas. The artist creates a personal carbon black technique, initiated and explored in the drawings of 1999, a time of great introspective labour. From 2000 onwards, his blacks is no longer painted with traditional techniques, tempera, walnut husk, tar, but become the fruit of a long process of sedimentation of the combustion of the candles and oil lanterns flames, a gesture that recalls the evocative image of the hermit who illuminates the long path with his lantern.
